I always dream of working in a high-rise building, wearing designer suit, and stylish colleagues. Sadly, in the reality, I’m working in a factory where cute sandals and one-piece dresses are brutally banned. In stead, my pairs of Dickies and Converse are my typical weekly 9 to 5 look. O.K. Maybe it’s time to look for new employment opportunities in the glamourous world where I just imagined.
Even though I am equipped with a completed design portfolio, a well-tailored résumé, and relevant references, but there is still one more step to the success – interview. To be honest, my job interview wardrobe, I’d rather put it this way, is disastrous. I took some bad advises about job interview attire from job seeking websites and some friends whose job hunting journeys seemed no luck. Something like, “blacks and whites are safe”, “being extremely conservative”, and so on. I mystically believed that conservative looking white shirt and a pair of black trouser will impress the hiring manager. Not true. Who would want to hire a restaurant server (no offense) to be a part of their creative team?
I had a job interview with Urban Decay cosmetic years ago for a part-time graphic designer position. I was confident about my portfolio and professional experience, but when I see what those “young and happy girls” wear to work, I had a bad feeling that I won’t get the job. What I was wearing was, same old, white shirt, black trousers, and black ballet flat (I couldn’t walk with heels!) I was so embarrassed that I looked no better then their janitor. In contrast to my humble but hilarious outfit, those girls looked like they were going to a cocktail party or prom!
